Complete Guide to Growing the Best Roses in 2023

March 1, 2023 · Gardening

best roses for 2023

Are you looking to take your rose garden to the next level by 2023? With the right knowledge and tips, you can grow the best roses and have a bountiful harvest. In this guide, we’ll provide you with the top tips and tricks for growing roses so that you can achieve beautiful results in no time.

Select the best rose to fit your garden.

The first step to growing the finest roses by 2023 is selecting the best rose for your needs. Think about what kind of roses you want to grow in your garden, from kinds that are super fragrant and colorful to those that are low maintenance and disease-resistant.

Also l, think about what style of garden you want to achieve, perhaps a cottage garden?

Secondly, do you want a thornless rose, climbing rose or rambling rose!

Do some research and find the one that fits all of your criteria… including what USDA garden zone you live in!

Here are some of our top favorite roses from David Austin Roses:

  • Top Fragrant Rose: Gertrude Jekyll
  • Top Bare Root Rose: Claire Austin Bare Root
  • Top Climbing Rose: James Galaway English Rose
  • Top Bush Rose: Lady of Shalott
  • Top Disease Resistant Rose: The Country Parson

Test your soil.

It’s essential to properly check and amend your soil.

Test the pH and nutrient levels to help ensure the soil is ideal for the overall well-being of your roses.

Obtain a soil testing kit or contact your local garden center to help you.

Adjust your soil if necessary with amendments depending on your results of the tests.

Use mulch to improve soil health.

Adding a mulch (such as cedar mulch) over the top of your soil and around your roses will help prevent and reduce weeds, aid in temperature regular and add nutrients to your soil.

Using leaves in the fall to cover around the base of your rose is another great organic method for mulching.

Control weeds and pests organically.

Preventing weeds and pests from taking over your roses is the key to the health of your roses.

Where possible try to use organic methods first, such as hand-pulling weeds and mulching.

Introduce beneficial insects (such as lady bugs) to eat pests like aphids, and if necessary use organic pesticides that are non-toxic. Our top favorite here is neem oil.

Best companion plantings.

Another great method for pest control through organic methods is by using companion plantings. Essentially you are planting plants together that are mutually beneficial to one another.

A few great examples are garlic, alliums, sage or parsley to help deter unwanted pests such as aphids from chomping on your roses.

Schedule applications of fertilizer.

Fertilizer boosts your roses’ growth and helps them to fight off common diseases such as leaf spot and/or powdery mildew.

Apply a balanced fertilizer monthly during the growing season.

Monitor your roses regularly for signs of deficiency (such as yellowing of leaves or slowed growth).

Allow several weeks after applying fertilizer to harvest any flowers, as it takes time for the plant to digest the nutrients.

For organic fertilizing, you can apply coffee grounds, banana peels, wood ash, rotted manure and alpha meal around the base of your roses!

Keep up with regular pruning.

It’s important to continually monitor the health of your roses and remove any diseased, damaged or dying branches. (The 3 D’s in pruning).

Additionally, prune out any crossing branches.

Lastly, most roses benefit from regular “deadheading.” Deadheading simply means removing spent blooms. If a rose is classified as “self-cleaning,” this means a rose will deadhead itself! (SCORE)

If you’re unsure where to prune on your roses while deadheading, a great rule of thumb is to prune just above a stem with a set of 5 leaves.
