Unlock the Secrets: A Beginner’s Guide to Growing Dahlias

July 6, 2023 · Gardening

Caring for dahlias

Dahlias are stunning flowering plants known for their vibrant colors and intricate petal arrangements. If you’re a gardening enthusiast and want to dive into the world of dahlias, you’ve come to the right place. In this beginner’s guide, we’ll walk you through some essential care tips to help you nurture your dahlias and witness their breathtaking blooms.

Selecting the Right Dahlia Varieties

When starting with dahlias, it’s important to choose varieties that are well-suited for beginners. Look for varieties labeled as “easy to grow” or “beginner-friendly.”

Some popular choices include Bishop of Llandaff, Karma Choc, and Café au Lait. Opt for tubers instead of seeds, as they provide a more reliable start.

Here are some tips to help you make the right choice with growing dahlias:

  1. Consider Your Growing Conditions: Take into account the climate, soil type, and the amount of sunlight your dahlia plants will receive. Some dahlias thrive in full sun, while others prefer partial shade.

  2. Determine Your Purpose: Consider your purpose for growing dahlias. Are you looking for cut flowers to display in bouquets? Or are you interested in adding color to your garden beds? There are dahlias available in various sizes, colors, and forms, so choose accordingly.

  3. Research Different Types: Dahlias come in many different types, including decorative, cactus, ball, pompom, and waterlily dahlias, to name a few. Each type has its own unique characteristics and bloom shapes.

  4. Consult with Experts: Reach out to local gardening experts, visit garden centers, or join online gardening communities to gain insights from experienced gardeners.

  5. Consider Disease Resistance: Some dahlia varieties are more resistant to common diseases and pests, making them easier to grow and maintain. Look for disease-resistant varieties if you’re concerned about potential issues.

  6. Personal Preference: At the end of the day, the choice of dahlia varieties also comes down to personal preference. Choose the varieties that resonate with your gardening style.

By considering these factors and doing some research, you’ll be able to select the right dahlia varieties for your garden and enjoy their stunning blooms throughout the growing season.

Growing Dahlias

Choosing the Perfect Planting Spot

Dahlias thrive in full sunlight, so select a spot in your garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogging, as dahlias prefer moist but not overly wet conditions.

Preparing the Soil

Prepare the soil well for growing dahlias

Before planting your dahlias, prepare the soil by loosening it with a garden fork. Incorporate organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to improve drainage and enrich the soil with nutrients. Aim for a pH level between 6.5 and 7.0, which is slightly acidic to neutral.

Planting the Tubers

Wait until the frost has passed and the soil has warmed up before planting your dahlia tubers, typically in late spring or early summer. Dig a hole about 6-8 inches deep and place the tuber horizontally with the eye (the bud) facing up. Cover the tuber with soil, leaving about 2 inches of the neck exposed. Space multiple tubers about 18-24 inches apart to allow proper airflow.

Check out my previous post on how to dig up and store dahlia tubers.

Watering and Mulching

Water your dahlias regularly, aiming to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deep watering once or twice a week is generally sufficient, depending on the weather conditions. To retain moisture and suppress weeds, apply a layer of organic mulch around the plants. Avoid mulching directly against the stems to prevent rotting.

Providing Support

As dahlias grow, they may require support to prevent their stems from bending or breaking. Install stakes or cages around the plants early on, ensuring they are sturdy enough to hold the weight of the matured plant. Tie the stems to the support structure using soft garden twine or plant ties, allowing them room to grow while providing stability.

Regular Feeding

Dahlias are hungry plants and benefit from regular feeding. Apply a balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 or 14-14-14 formula, every 4-6 weeks during the growing season. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the appropriate dosage. Alternatively, you can use organic options like compost tea or fish emulsion for a more natural approach.

Deadheading and Pruning

Caring for dahlias

To encourage continuous blooming, remove spent flowers by deadheading with pruning shears regularly. This practice directs the plant’s energy towards producing new blooms instead of seed production. Additionally, pinch back the tips of the plants when they reach around 12-18 inches in height. This encourages branching and results in a bushier, fuller plant.

Conclusion

With these easy care tips for beginners, you have everything you need to start growing dahlias. Just remember to choose the right kinds of dahlias, give them enough sunlight, water them correctly, support them when necessary, and feed them regularly. By following these instructions, you’ll get beautiful dahlias and a garden full of colorful flowers. Don’t worry about trying new things and learning as you go, because gardening is a fun and always changing activity. So go ahead, get your hands dirty, and see your dahlias grow into amazing natural creations.

Enjoy gardening!
